My name is Kathryn Fisher, and I am a rising junior at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. I went to a high school in Nashville that partnered with PTM for service days, so that was my first introduction to this amazing ministry. I have a major in Child and Family Studies and am hoping to work in non-profit ministry
once I graduate. I love working with and mentoring kids, and I actually have a good amount of experience doing just this; however, admittedly, my past experiences have all stemmed from the same demographic of kids all with very similar backgrounds to my own. This summer, I decided to take the leap toward PTM and get out of my comfort zone of the “Brentwood bubble”, as some may call it. I am so glad that I made that decision, and I encourage anyone considering an uplifting change of pace to find that here at PTM!
In my second week at PTM, we focused on the verse 1 Kings 3:12, “Behold, I now do according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you”. We really stressed that value of uniqueness in God’s image; we have conducted CREATE projects like woodworking, knitting, painting, calligraphy, and jewelry making that promote creativity; we have encouraged the students to share their dreams—and dream BIG. The students have inspired me with their aspirations and courage and taught me to dream big and hard.
At this halfway point into my all too short summer at PTM, I have strived to adjust my innately impatient attitude to an approach full of patience and gentleness. I have learned to invest in the junior highers and laugh at their jokes and listen to their stories and make them feel loved and important. I have yearned to humble myself to a place ofgratitude for the resources I have been blessed with. Like 1 Kings 3:12 says, we all possess unique minds and lives, “so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you”. I realize that, in many ways, I am so so different from these 7 th
-9 th
grade boys and girls; yet, we all share the one, truest similarity—that we are all passionately and perfectly pursued and loved by our Savior, who has intricately detailed each of our lives to work in tandem together this summer.
