Senior Spotlight – Steven Watkins

January 28, 2019

Pat Whelan, Steven’s longtime PTM mentor, loves how he cares about people. He really cares about them, Pat says. He also enjoys his smile. It is easy to see why.

Steven, a senior at Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School, has been at PTM since the third grade. His earliest memories are Ms. Sarah making him read and Mr. Chan always being cheerful.

Q: Steven, what is your favorite PTM memory?

A: At the end of the week, we would get to go swimming at the Y when we were younger…and now hanging out with Mr. Terrance and everybody.

Q: Who is someone you admire and why?

A: My mom. She works hard. She makes sure I have what I need to be successful, that I have all my school stuff. She makes sure I go and that I do good.

Q: What are some words you would use to describe yourself?

A: Laid back, cool to be around, comedic.

Q: If you could have any superpower what would it be?

A: To be invisible.

Q: If you could have lunch with anyone living or dead who would it be?

A: Michael Jordan. I would ask him, “What are some things you did to get you where you are today?”

Q: When someone says your name what do you hope they think about you?

A: That I am a good person. That I carry myself well. Trustworthy and loyal.

Q: What is your favorite subject in school and have you had a favorite teacher?

A: Favorite subject is biology/science. My favorite teacher might be in kindergarten, Ms. Jones.

She was on me a lot but we had fun!

Q: What is a gift or talent you feel you have?

A: Probably sports.

Q: What is something you do that makes you happy?

A: Playing baseball and basketball.

Q: What are your plans after high school?

A: College- I would like to go away somewhere. I want to study computer science.

Q: When you see yourself in 10 years what is life like?

A: Playing professional sports, having my own business. Living in a good and big house.

I would like a family when I am around 30.

Question to Pat Whelan, Steven’s mentor: What is your hope for Steven?

A: That he understands who he is in Jesus, what that means about possibilities and that he never forgets it!

Thanks, Steven and Pat!
