Meet Rachel

June 28, 2017

Hello! My name is Rachel Simon. This fall, I will be a junior at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. I’m working towards a B.S. in Psychology. I am an avid watermelon fan, and I think that _____ is the best thing since sliced bread. Originally, I’m from Indiana, but this past semester I traveled 8,500 miles from home to study in Southern Africa. I was struck by the adverse effects poverty on children both in Southern Africa, and in the United States.

This summer, I am hoping to gain experience in teaching, behavior management, and the overall psycho-social development of children in adverse circumstances. Upon returning from Africa, I found out about PTM from a friend of mine at Furman. I jumped at the opportunity to work with such an incredible organization. As a part of the St. Luke’s Community House team, I teach SPARK fitness and Bible to middle-schoolers. I also serve as a counselor for the Crossover sports camp.

While working with children can be challenging, the Lord is teaching me about patience, grace, and servant leadership every day. From explaining complex theological concepts to playing Knock-Out on the basketball court, I am continually impressed by these students’ curiosity, talents, and perseverance. Most of my favorite moments at PTM have been simple: watching older students read to younger ones, witnessing kindergartners make their first shot in basketball, and even seeing middle school girls splash around in fountains without a care in the world.

I am anxiously anticipating what else God has in store for me this summer. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to be here at PTM!
