Literacy Fun by Jordan Taylor

January 30, 2017

On January 21st, we hosted our first PTM Reading Camp of the year. This reading camp was unique: it was girls only, and hosted at our Community House site, with only Community House girls in attendance. It was their first reading camp experience, and from the looks and the laughter shared, it was fairly successful!

Junior League (JL Nashville) was our coordinating partner for this reading camp; having Vanderbilt’s BYX fraternity and Belmont’s Into Nashville group lead previous camps, this was the first girls-only group that has helped with camp. Led by Lizzie Persekian, JL came prepared with a specific book for the girls (The Owl Diaries comic book series by Rebecca Elliott) and snacks, games, and crafts to accompany it. After introductions and get to know you games, led by PTM’s literacy director Sarah Norberg, the girls partnered with the JL ladies to discover various activities.

After reading The Owl Diaries with their partner, the girls had a chance to make homemade jewelry (like Eva in the book made), draw/write a comic strip based off the books they read, and play a fun snowball fight sight word game. The day concluded with a owl-themed snack of dirt pie pudding cups and sharing encouragements and favorite activities of the day. All the girls left with their jewelry and comic strip, and with knowledge of a new, fun book series for them to enjoy.

The girls had a lot of fun, and it looked like our Junior League friends did as well! We’re so grateful for their partnership with our literacy program and the way they loved our girls on this fun field trip!

Karina, one of our kindergarteners, told her mom that she “wanted to do that EVERY Saturday.” A day full of literacy fun and time spent with some of the best kids I know? I can’t argue with that!
