Letter to the Future LEAP Year Coordinator

February 8, 2021

Dear Future LEAP Year Coordinator,

You will join a team of amazing people committed to helping children and youth have great opportunities for building their own sense of connectedness.  Our staff is made up of hard-working, creative, and dedicated individuals striving to fulfill an ambitious mission while creating for ourselves a family-like culture.  You will add to that.  You value highly the mission of PTM and those who are committed to working towards fulfilling this mission.  You recognize in yourself spiritual gifts that will be a perfect match for recruiting, supervising, and sustaining young adults committing to year-long internships at PTM .  You are aware that this “job” is more of a “calling” and you will celebrate along with me the incredible joy of doing what you love and what you are good at while meeting a significant need. Thanks for bringing this balance to PTM.  Here are some of the gifts and skills for which I am especially grateful.

Above all, you love the Lord.  Your deepest desire is to honor God with your whole life and to see others pursue a relationship with God with great joy and obedience.  You want PTM students to know God personally and you help foster that faith in PTM’s LEAPers.  You understand that a relationship with God is made possible by the death and resurrection of Jesus and you embrace PTM’s Christ-centered mission and core beliefs.

You are a great salesperson.  You believe in the meaningfulness of the LEAP Program and are capable of recruiting young adults to apply.  You recruit across a wide range of sources and relationships and are able to help PTM meet goals for building a more diverse program. Our candidates trust you.

You are a great teacher.  You approach the LEAP Year knowing that it is a launching pad for these young adults into a diverse range of ministry opportunities that will help build the kingdom of God. You are creative in helping LEAPers learn about themselves, about ministry in an urban setting, about developing professional skills, and about growing in a relationship with Jesus Christ.  You are organized and able to plan ahead so that you build into the learning plan of every LEAPer the expertise of others—from both within and outside of PTM circles.

You are good at “hug and boot” conversations.  You know when to encourage with affection and affirmation and when to confront and challenge.   People are drawn to you and naturally open their hearts to you.  You are a great listener, you are trustworthy, and you are wise.  Those applying for LEAP Year roles partly want to serve at PTM because of the supervision you offer.

You recognize the strengths that children and families growing up in and around the Preston Taylor community have to offer.  You cherish what you will learn from them.  You are also able to teach our staff and volunteers what it means to respect the strengths and contributions of the neighborhoods where we serve.

You have the perfect balance of being task-oriented and people-oriented.  You care deeply that volunteers, staff, and students all have great experiences through PTM.  You also accept with eagerness the task of growing PTM’s staff through our LEAP program.  You are motivated by PTM’s strategic plan.  You are persistent in recruitment, but unwilling to sacrifice healthy relationships.  You keep good records and lead an organized team. Those who work under you feel inspired and challenged.  You invest in the growth of others.

You are a celebrator.  You create traditions, you decorate the LEAP House, you gather people together, and you lead rhythms of acknowledging the big and little victories that will come through the year.

As demanding as this part-time job (20 hours per week) will be and as high as the expectations are for an incredible team that keeps growing, there will be some benefits that are a perfect match for where you are.  There is a lot of flexibility in your job.  Much of your work can take place at hours you set.  Much of your job can be done from a home office—or from PTM—or from a coffee shop.  Like for me, the biggest benefits will come in the satisfaction of serving God and others doing something that is fun, that makes a difference, and that provides many opportunities for relationships with outstanding people.

If interested in this position, please review the job description here and then email a cover letter and resume to me ( chan@prestontaylorministries.org ) by February 26, 2021.  I am very excited about meeting you and serving with you.

Very gratefully yours,

Chan Sheppard
