Letter to PTM’s Future Director of Operations by Chan Sheppard

March 5, 2015

Dear Future Director of Operations,

We have a handful of pearls on our staff and are looking for a string—someone who c rainy boys an provide stability and structure .  I am grateful for you because you recognize the value of the string.  You enjoy being backstage making sure the sound, lighting, and props are all in place.   Not only do you enjoy this role, and are good at it, but you see in this role God’s calling and an opportunity for ministry.  You consider it an act of worship to develop and grow the structure of an organization so that programs can run at top efficiency, and the organization can thrive long into the future.   Specifically, here are some of the gifts I see in you.

You are passionate about God and desire deeply to follow God’s will for your life.  God’s will directs every decision you make and your deepest desire is to bring glory to God in all that you do. You are grounded in scripture and in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  You embody the very core beliefs that we want desperately the youth of PTM to know, feel, and believe. ( https://prestontaylorministries.org/about/core-beliefs/ )

You are a precisionist.  You have been called nerdy before because of how excited you get when your bank statement reconciles to the penny.  You love starting meetings on time and running them according to a well-planned agenda.  Missing receipts drives you crazy.

You are an excellent communicator.  Whether you are interacting by voice, digitally, or in person, people feel heard and understood.  You write with clarity and humor.  You welcome others into PTM genuinely and warmly.  You are able to broadcast PTM’s story (and stories) creatively and consistently.

You are both rigid and full of grace.  You recognize that not everyone cares as much as you do about paperwork, but you gently and firmly help them understand.  You are able to keep track of vacation and sick days in a way that is fair and mission-minded while encouraging our staff to take time off for rest and recreation.  You enjoy being called the “receipt nazi”, while having great relationships with all members of PTM staff.

You are resourceful.  You look for ways to save PTM money.  If we don’t have something we need, you go get it.  If we are missing a skill on our staff, you find a volunteer willing to serve.  You have great ideas.  You share them.  You show initiative.  You implement.

You are a leader.    You know the joy of working as part of a team and of being the one leading the team.  You are excited about working with PTM’s staff.  You delegate important jobs to interns and other staff members.  You are able to gather volunteers for service in committee.  You are more than capable of leading those committees.

You are a giver.  You have a generous spirit and you look for ways to volunteer at PTM.  You enjoy giving financial contributions to PTM because you recognize what a good investment in youth PTM is—and how wisely contributions are managed.

You will enjoy the PTM staff and will fit in like family.   The salary will be $32,000.  PTM will also provide $2,400 per year for health care—either through enrollment in PTM’s plan or in reimbursement for your own plan.   Additionally, there will be three weeks of paid leave built into the rhythm of the year.  While you could make more money in another job, you will enjoy working at PTM so much you will feel like you are overpaid.  Like for me, the biggest benefits will come in the satisfaction of serving God and others doing something that is fun, that makes a difference, and that provides many opportunities for relationships with outstanding people.

If interested in this position, please email me a cover letter and resume by April 30, 2015. (chan@prestontaylorministries.org). I am very excited about meeting you and serving with you.  You will make PTM better.

Very gratefully yours,

Chan Sheppard
