Leadership Development by John Thornton

July 18, 2011

This summer I have had the privilege of working with our junior high and high school students at our Calvin House Summer Camp. We have spent time reading, working on math problems, learning Scripture, playing some very hot games of basketball, and taking some really great field trips.

While all of our students have exhibited some great leadership traits, I would like to take just a minute to tell you about the oldest student we have had in our program this summer, Jamie Dunn. Jamie is going into his senior year of high school and has been involved in PTM and Calvin House programs for 5 years. Through out our time together Jamie has consistently been the first one to help Tess or myself if we ever need anything. He has also done a great job of including and encouraging our junior high students. Just a few weeks ago we went to the YMCA to go swimming and of the group that went, Jamie was the oldest by several years. Instead of adopting a “too-cool-for-school” attitude as plenty of older students tend to do, Jamie spent time playing with the younger students. Then when it was time to leave, Jamie helped get every one out of the pool and made sure that they all got dressed and in the car in a timely manner.

I have been incredibly grateful for Jamie and his leadership through self-sacrifice. He has consistently had a great attitude no matter what has been asked of him and has been a great model for where we hope for our students to be by the time they are coming to the end of their involvement at PTM and Calvin House.
