PTM is all about discovering the God sized dreams for our lives! I love that we serve a God who encourages us to dream big
and to look beyond what we see right in front of us. As I have been reflecting on this idea, something was stirring in my heart. What if we taught our chi ldren not only to dream big and to understand that with God all things are possible, but that we as God’s children were his dream. I loved challenging myself with this thought because it helps to shape our identity in Christ. In order to dream God sized dreams, we need to understand who we are in him, because of how he has created us we can dream bigger.
During a dream group around Valentine’s Day, I asked the students what was the greatest love letter ever written? Most of the responses were either, “Romeo and Juliet” or “Ms. Gabby, how am I supposed to know that?” I laughed a little as these first and second graders were so confused as to why I would ask them that question. The looks of disgust boldly blanketed their face as I began talking about love. I told them that the greatest love letter to ever be written was the bible! Sounds of “ ooo’s ” and “awes” filled the room.
I had brought some heart shaped letters and explained to them that we were going to write God a love letter about what we think about him. This activity was a beautiful way to express any questions or thoughts the students had about God. It allowed them the freedom to ask thems elves a question I find myself asking almost daily, “God, who do you say that I am?” As I walked around to see what the stu dents were writing, I came across one letter that brought tears to my eyes. Alonte , a first-grade student at Park Avenue, was writing about who God is to him. “I love you God, kind. You are dad. You love us. You made us. We’re your son and daughter.” He was so excited to read to me what he had written and was proud of it . I love how even at a young age; he understands who he i s in his father’s eyes. The love that God has for Alonte is undeniable.
