Wh
en Tris’ mom came to pick him up on Sunday following our first ever PTM-wide retreat, I was surprised to hear the first words out of his mouth; “Mom, we had a pillow fight”. Nina Borum, PTM’s program director had put together an incredible program for what we called “Extreme Retreat”. Centering on healthy lifestyles, we had neon dance night, morning workouts, health-centered workshops, fitness tests, Capture the Flag with water balloons, speakers and worship services, campfire vespers, tacky field day, and personal devotional time. Nearly every minute for 42 hours was well-planned and structured, but what stood out to Tris was a 5 minute spontaneous pillow fight.
For third grade LaBronte, one of his highlights was shaving. While looking at the mirror, I caught him staring at me shaving on Saturday morning. He asked for a little shaving cream on his fresh 8 year old face. A few others came into the sink area and asked for shaving cream on their face, too. I obliged and “shaved” them all with the back of my razor. As I did I remembered with great fondness the many mornings I watched my father shave.
We had an incredible retreat with many success stories, but it’s instructive to me that what our students will remember most are the little incidents that we didn’t even think to plan. We have a creative God who captures our imagination in between all of the planning we do. Maybe I need to plan less and be present more…
