Boys and Cars by Chan Sheppard

December 7, 2011

I’m not sure if this has been scientifically proven before, but I am convinced that most boys have at least two significant longings–one, to be connected to a father; two, to have a car.  Last night gave 18 of our boys a scratch for that deep itch.  We drove up the delivery ramp with a bus full of adrenaline at 5:30.  As we walked in the factory door of Steve Ward and Associates, each boy was met by a kind-hearted man with experience at building Pinewood Derby cars.  At 5:35, each boy had a car ready to be painted, four wheels, two axles, crazy glue, and graphite.  The partners  worked hard painting, finishing the wheels, and answering questions like, “do you think it’s fast?”, “what color should I paint my number?”, and “can I keep it?”  After completing their cars and weighing them in, the boys were treated to pizza and soft drinks, and then the competition began.  While some experienced the “thrill of victory”, others experienced the “agony of defeat”.  All experienced the joy that comes from creating, teamwork, and the common bond of speed. (Congratulations to Marquis whose car averaged 187 mph down the track).

But, at 7:30 we had to load up the bus to leave.  Over 75% of our students returned to a fatherless home–longing for more.  In many ways we all long for something more.  Watching children at PTM crave those human relationships, reminds me of my own longing for even more than the abundance God has already given me. As great as many of our fathers were/are, ultimately the only truly satisfying father-child relationship will be with our heavenly father who consistently calls us to him.
