“Langston Hughes and probably Maya Angelou.” This is the response from Amaya, a senior at Hillsboro High, when asked who is someone she would want to have lunch with if given a choice. “It is not that I am all about poetry, but I love their words. I would want to ask Maya Angelou how she did so much having been through so much?”

Amaya, a PTM student since early elementary, recalls her first memories of PTM as seeming like there was always a lot of nice people around. “The volunteers were all so nice and I know they did not have to be there. We took great trips!”

Q: Amaya, who is someone that you admire and why?

A: My Grandmama. She is a strong, independent woman. She is always happy, too.

Q: What are some words you would use to describe yourself?

A: Caring, Big heart. I don’t always have the patience I should. Goofy. Love to laugh.

Q: Do you have a favorite teacher who stands out in your mind?

A: Ms. McDonald- 5th and 6th grade social studies. She was a singer and a teacher, so she would teach us all these songs to help us remember things. There was a good vibe in her class.

Q: What is your favorite subject in school?

A: Math! I love math even though it is hard! There is always an answer.

Q: What is your favorite PTM memory?

A: The Mystery Trip. We went to Alabama to the Space museum and to the movies.

Q: If you could have any superpower what would it be?

A: To be invisible.

Q: What is something you do that makes you happy?

A: Working and making money.

Q: What is an important trait in a friend?

A: Trustworthy, you can be yourself and good listener.

Q: What are your plans post high school?

A: College- not sure where. I want to be in healthcare. A Neonatal nurse.

Q: When you think of your life ten years from now what do you want it to be like?

A: Having a house, being married with one child. Having my degree and working in a hospital.

Thanks, Amaya! We are looking forward to seeing your future unfold!
